The effects of gas accretion on the pre-main-sequence evolution of stars have been discussed. It is found that the evolution is dominated by the accretion rate rather than by initial conditions, and that the past evolutionary behavior of a star cannot be determined from a knowledge of its present evolutionary state. However, the masses of the pre-main-sequence stars can be determined uniquely irrespective of the existence of accretion while the determination of their ages is very model dependent.
