Scientific paper

This paper attempts to synthesize information from a large amount of photographic data received during the Mariner 10 mission to Mercury. The approach includes the compilation of crater-density isoline maps and cumulative crater size-frequency distributions, and that results in a detailed and unbiased description of the craterization of the planet. This statistical approach has also been applied to the recognition of physiographic units and has been used as a starting point for the development of the evolutionary history of the surface of Mercury based on assumptions on the temporal placement of the Caloris event. A sequence of events was obtained, and two hypotheses for the evolution of the surface are proposed.
