The averaging method is used to obtain approximate equations describing the evolution of the rotations of a symmetric rigid satellite with a homogeneous viscoelastic antenna. The system is represented as a ring onto which a viscoelastic film is stretched. Transverse deformations of the membrane accompanied by energy dissipation are responsible for the evolution of regular precession. Steady-state motions of the system are determined, and their stability is analyzed. The present study is of interest in connection with the design of satellite solar power stations.
