We propose to spectroscopically follow-up the low-redshift population of 24(micron) sources in two deep fields observed with Spitzer and XMM: the Lockman Hole and the Subaru XMM Deep Field. This dataset, in conjunction with our published data in the First Look Survey, will allow us to compute the low-redshift infrared luminosity function overcoming the main limitations of other published studies: heavy reliance on photometric redshifts, AGN contamination, and cosmic variance. The chosen fields are ideal for cosmological studies because of their low Galactic absorption column density and the large amount of ancillary data (ultra-violet, optical, X-ray and radio imaging). Interestingly, only a handful of redshifts are known for galaxies in these fields, mainly of high-redshift or X-ray sources. This study will be the first to directly follow-up the far-infrared sources detected by Spitzer in these two fields in a redshift range usually neglected by other studies.
