Observations of asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars associated with the OH 1612 MHz maser are used to study the evolution of the double-peak spectrum of the maser when the mass-loss rate of the AGB star (M) varies in time. The empirical relations between the OH emission range and M, and between the maser luminosity and M are reproduced. The model also indicates that the OH emission can last over 100-500 years after the termination of the AGB.
