This paper contains the study of the slowdown observed in pulsars in terms of the magnetic dipole radiation of neutron stars with decaying magnetic field and unstable orientation of the magnetic field axis. It is suggested that the orientation of the magnetic axis changes with different time scales in different pulsars, or that objects with positive second derivatives of the period may be considerably younger than their characteristic ages.
