High-galactic-latitude 4-m limit plates have been searched with an automated faint object detection and classification system. A complete sample of 67,513 objects to J = 24mag have been classified as stellar or galactic. At the galactic pole, 17,100 galaxies per square degree to this limiting magnitude are found. Surprisingly, the galactic number counts outside the Local Supercluster uniformly follow the relationship log N is proportional to 0.41J over a range of 7 mag. Evolutionary models are consistent with the data only for galaxy formation redshift greater than zf approximately equal to 10, or if primeval ellipticals and SO's are somehow invisible.
