The gauge-invariant perturbation equations proposed in the preceding article are solved in this article in order to study the evolution of the energy density contrast in the radiation- and matter-dominated eras. The results are compared with earlier non-gauge-invariant as well as gauge-invariant treatments. In a number of cases the solutions are different. In the radiation-dominated era growing perturbations are found, where other treatments lead to constant or decaying energy density perturbations.
