Primordial magnetic fields do not evolve by a redshift of magnetic energy only. We show that the same processes that damp adiabatic density fluctuations around neutrino decoupling and recombination damp fluctuations in magnetic fields as well. This leads to strong damping of the power in magnetic fields up to the characteristic damping scale M ~= 10^13 M_solar (Silk mass). We discuss how this damping affects the nature of cosmological magnetic fields that may be present today. We also suggest how the observations of extragalactic fields could provide a new window into processes occuring in the early universe.
