A numerical simulation of the merging of a compact group of galaxies is reported. Starting from a hierarchy of galaxies, the compact group evolved into a system dominated by a central merger remnant, which then accreted the remaining members. The whole process took only a few orbital times. If compact groups are interpreted as transient phases in the dynamical evolution of looser groups, the merger remnants they leave behind exemplify galaxy formation at the present epoch.
