Current theories of binary-system evolution are reviewed in the light of observational data. Topics discussed include the evolutionary paradox, mass-transfer and mass-loss phenomena, and gas streams. Large-scale isotropic mass loss of H-He plasma at temperatures 1-10 million K and velocities 1000-10,000 km/sec is postulated for the components of both close and wide binaries in their post-main-sequence stages. Subsurface convection is identified as the most likely source of the radiant flux enabling primary-secondary reversals while spectroscopic anomalies at optical wavelengths are attributed to stellar-atmosphere gas streams rather than circumstellar gas. It is pointed out that present observational data are not sufficient to determine unique solutions of the complex equations required by theoretical models of close-binary hydrodynamic interactions.
