A summary is given of our on-going effort to study massive gas-rich mergers in the local universe from the ground and from space (QUEST: Quasar/ULIRG Evolutionary Study). A Cycle 1 medium-size Spitzer program will complement this effort by providing valuable information on the energy production mechanisms in these objects, and the obscuration and physical conditions along the merger sequence.
