The evolution and propagation of a density wavelet on a galactic disk are investigated analytically, applying a thin-transition-layer approximation. Wave-packet trajectories, swing amplifications, and overreflection rates are determined for two classes of basic states, and the results of swing theory are compared with those of the sheet model of Goldreich and Lynden-Bell (1965). Agreement is found for one class of basic states, while the significant deviation found for the other class is attributed to inadequacies in sheet theory.
