The Soudan 1 experiment has yielded evidence for an average underground muon flux of ≡7×10-11cm-2s-1 which points back to the X-ray binary Cygnus X-3, and which exhibits the 4.8 h periodicity observed for other radiation from this source. Underground muon events which seem to be associated wih Cygnus X-3 also show evidence for longer time variability of the flux. Such underground muons cannot be explained by conventional models of the propagation and interaction of cosmic rays.
