Results are presented for measurements of the altitude effect reflecting the terrestrial gravitational shift, which were performed by comparing the proper time scales of two cesium-beam atomic frequency standards, one located 3500 m above sea level and the other at a site 250 m above sea level. The performance and calibration of the experimental apparatus are described, and possible errors in the measurements are rigorously evaluated. The difference in rates between the two standards due to the gravitational shift is found to range from approximately 33.8 to 36.5 nsec/day. It is concluded that there are no experimental data against the general theory of relativity.
