A regional stratigraphical and sedimentological study of the approximately 2770 Myr old lower Fortesque Group is reported. The results of the study suggest that a major stabilization of the underlying granitoid-greenstone terrain has predated Fortesque basin formation. This event, which is thought to have been relatively rapid, marked a major change in the tectonic evolution of the Pilbara Block.
