The Atmosphere Structure Experiment on the four Pioneer Venus entry probes made direct measurements of temperature and pressure in the atmosphere of Venus at four widely separated sites. We have searched for eddy structures in the measurements using a standard spatial filtering technique to remove the large variations in the measured quantities found by the probes. The filter separates structure with vertical scales of less than or equal to ~ 10 km (``eddy structures'') from larger scale structures (``background structures''). We have previously reported (B.A.A.S. 26, 1144) on an analysis of the observations acquired below ~ 45 km altitude which we have interpreted as evidence of atmospheric gravity waves. Here we report that between ~ 42 km and ~ 60 km altitude all the probes show eddy T values with amplitudes of ~ 1(deg) K --well above the uncertainty level of the measurements -- with a well-defined vertical wavelength of ~ 6 km. This structure is quite well correlated between the three small probes and some correlation with the fourth Large Probe is evident as well. This correlation suggests a dynamical phenomenon with a large horizontal scale such as a planetary wave or atmospheric tide or a globally widespread smaller scale dynamical process. We are evaluating both interpretations of the observations and will present the results of our analysis. This work has been supported by the Planetary Atmospheres Program of NASA.
