Reconnection of magnetic field lines of force in the solar wind was studied using HEOS-1 and OGO-5 data. The reconnection models of Petscheck, Yeh and Axford, and Sonnerup are discussed. Four observations of structures related to large change of magnetic field directions (days 36, 260 and 306, 1969 HEOS-1 data; day 64, 1969 OGO-5 data) are presented. The reconnection rate reached with the Petscheck model appears to be higher than previously estimated. The observed geometry agrees with the Petscheck model and the scale length in the solar wind is 5,000 to 100,000 km. Structures such as those predicted by Sonnerup and by Yeh and Axford were not observed within the scale lengths of the two models.
