Evidence for elliptical orbit rotation with a period of 4.5 years has been found upon comparison of the light curves of the HDE 226868-Cyg X-1 system, made in six consecutive observing seasons, with model light curves. The rotation, if real, is too fast to be due to the finite mass distribution of the optical star because the star is highly evolved and must have a high degree of central condensation. The explanation favored involves a perturbing third body, and the relations given by Lidov and Ziglin (1976) to find the expected mass-distance relation are used. A range of examples is found which would be sufficiently hierarchical to be stable against disruption.
