In circumstellar shells, the difference between the temperature of the grains and the temperature of the gas, due to radiation, must be taken into account when studying nucleation and growth. This leads to a new definition of the supersaturation ratio. The onset of growth is governed by the temperature of the small grains and is then independent of the detailed nucleation process. The nucleation and growth of graphite and silicate grains is considered in an expanding nova shell and near a cold star.
