An evaluation of the performance of the Aurora On-Line Search Tool (soon to be redeployed at http://www.cs.uah.edu/aurora-ost) is presented. The evaluation considers imagery from the archive of NASA POLAR Ultraviolet Imager (UVI) data for the storm of August 26-27, 1998. The evaluation focuses on the effect of a revised method for automated auroral oval segmentation on retrievals using the tool. The revised method has been described recently (Pattern Recognition, Vol. 40, 2007) and was shown to be more robust (to the day glow present in many UVI images) than other automated segmentation schemes that have been applied to the very large set of (millions of) UVI images. The prior showing, however, was limited to comparison of pixel differences, which are not searchable indices for the retrieval tool. Here, the performance is evaluated by comparison of an actually-searchable key, auroral power. The comparison here may thus be more indicative of the scientific value of the new segmentation method, as incorporated in the Aurora On-Line Search Tool.
