If η Car is a multiple star system as suggested by recent speckle interferometry, the initial masses of the components can be estimated from their relative brightnesses with the assumption of coevality. One set of data suggests that the primary star had an initial mass around 100 M_sun;. However, there are some possible difficulties with this idea.
