We present a very efficient nonparametric estimator for the strength of the periodic signal in a series of photon arrival times. The estimator is nonparametric in the sense that it does not depend on any a priori information about the shape of the source function. It is almost unbiased and has very small standard error. A confidence interval for the signal strength is also derived. A simple algorithm to implement the new estimator is provided. The performance of the estimator is illustrated on five sets of real data, yielding very satisfactory results.
