It is shown that for a fixed dispersion of the photometric distance modulus, the confidence interval in estimating distances to stars varies within a wide range and increases with the photometric distance. It is suggested that estimates of the partial star density function be based on a solution to the fundamental equation of star statistics rather than on an empirical density function in terms of photometric distances.
