Previous studies have shown signs of a sustained fluvial activity in the Xanthe Terra region on Mars, it is cut by several valley systems which formation processes still remain controversial in regards to the relative roles of groundwater sapping and surface runoff. We focus our study on the 800-km long Nanedi Vallis. Its highly sinuous shape and the presence of a small channel on the valley floor strongly indicates an origin by slow erosion of running water, and the lack of tributaries suggests that the river that cut the valley was mainly fed by groundwater. Using the High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) data we perform a morphometric analysis of the valley. The descriptive parameters are used in two different approaches to estimate the discharge rates: one based on the inner channel geometry and the other based on the valley meanders wavelength. Similar results with both methods indicate that the overall shape of the valley can be explained by the characteristics of the interior channel observed and thus that the later is representative of the original forming channel. Consequently, the characteristics of the inner channels observed, assuming that they varied very little along the formation of the canyon system, are used as inputs in a sediment transport model. We estimated the total volume of Nanedi Vallis using the MOLA topographic data. Transport rates computed for a variety of water heights and sediment sizes were then used to estimate the flow duration necessary to remove the corresponding volume of material. Assuming continuous flow, we obtain a lower limit to the duration of fluvial activity in Nanedi Vallis between ~ 3 × 102 years at Bankfull discharge and ~ 3 × 106 years with a flow depth of 3 m. Relevant hypothesis and assumptions on hydrological regime will allow us to better constrain the absolute duration of flow in Nanedi Vallis.
