The calibration consistency of the reflective solar bands between the current AVHRRs on operational polar- orbiting satellites and the next generation instrument VIIRS on NPP/NPOESS is critical for both weather and climate applications. In this study we explore the feasibility of using the Antarctic Dome C site and the SNO methodology to establish their radiometric calibration traceability. The Dome C site has been recognized as an exceptional site due to its dry atmosphere, low aerosol loading, uniformity, and climate stability. This site has recently become one of the eight worldwide instrumented "Landnet" calibration sites endorsed by the CEOS (Committee on Earth Observation Satellties)/WGCV(Working Group on Cal/Val). Characterization of this site is performed in this study using SeaWiFS observations, since SeaWiFS calibration is extremely stable with its dedicated and meticulous lunar calibration. The relationship among SeaWiFS instrument response, solar zenith angle, and BRDF effect are established for nadir observations. The calibration functions for SeaWiFS, MODIS (proxy for VIIRS), and AVHRR at the Dome C site are analyzed and compared. Hyperion observations over Dome C are used to take into account the spectral differences among all the instruments involved. Finally, SNO observations between MODIS and AVHRR over the Antactica are used for independent verification and uncertainty analysis.
