At many schools, and in many areas, the interest in astronomy is substantially greater than the resources available. In this time of strict budgets especially, adding new facilities to university departments is difficult. At Texas A&M University - Kingsville, we have recently addressed the difficulty inherent in adapting a telescope made in-house, suitable for casual observing, to a level of precision required for scientific research. It is thought that a description of the solutions of the problems involved in this transformation may be helpful for other schools in similar situations, or considering upgrades in this vein.
Funding for the work described in this paper was provided by the Texas Excellence Fund, adminstered by the state of Texas through Texas A&M University - Kingsville.
