The N2CO(+) molecular cation radical is potentially important in upper atmospheric reactions and various areas of astrophysical interest such as interstellar clouds, comets, and in certain planetary atmospheres. In this paper, ESR results are reported for the cation radicals (N-15)2(C-12)O(+), (N-15)2(C-13)O(+), and (N-14)2(C-13)O(+) trapped as isolated ions in neon matrices at 4 K. The N2CO(+) radical was generated by codepositing N2 and CO into a neon matrix under ionizing conditions. A complete resolution of the N-14, N-15, and C-13 A tensors reveals that the radical is planar and nonlinear. Electronic structure changes that occur as N2(+) and CO combine to form N2CO(+) are analyzed by comparing the nuclear hfs of the diatomic reactants with that of the product radical. The ESR results for N2CO(+) are compared with similar measurements for the isoelectronic ions C2O2(+), N4(+), and C2N2(-).
