ESO 341-IG04 appears to be an elliptical galaxy with distorted outer regions. The luminosity profile closely follows the de Vaucouleurs r exp-1/4 law out to five effective radii. Low-ionized gas is detected out to a distance corresponding to one effective radius. Unlike normal elliptical galaxies, ESO 341-IG04 is dominated by a relatively young stellar population evenly distributed over the main body. Spectral synthesis yields an age of the young stars of about 1 Gyr and a mass of several times 10 to the 10th solar masses. A total stellar mass for the galaxy of about 5 x 10 to the 11th solar masses, is derived. ESO 341-IG04 is a unique example of a juvenile elliptical galaxy, formed as a result of a merger involving ast least two massive gas-rich disk galaxies or a small group of such galaxies.
