We discuss the problem of escape from a model of a star cluster rotating in a circular orbit about its parent galaxy. The energy itself does not furnish a sufficient condition for escape, nor does the assumption that a star is far from the cluster. In the point-mass approximation of the cluster potential, we establish a sufficient condition for escape, and give arguments to show that it is also a necessary condition, in the sense that it will eventually be satisfied by almost any escaping star. We envisage applications in N- body models of star clusters.
