We will present the status and outline of the LOFT mission that is currently one of the 4 missions in the assessment phase of ESA. It is considered for a launch around 2020. LOFT is a revolutionary X-ray timing mission concept with an effective area >10 square meters sensitive between 2-30 keV. Besides the large area detector LOFT will carry a Wide Field Monitor as well providing information on transient events.
