Components, characteristics, and expected performance of the new ESA standard 15 S/X band antennas for deep space and earth orbital communications are described. The antennas were designed in response to the WARC '79 decision on frequency allocations for future space applications. The antenna mount is equipped with high angular acceleration and slew rates in azimuth and elevation for tracking satellites in LEO. Optimization and cost-related studies confirmed the 15-m diameter bowl as the best available configuration. Transmission will be possible at 2025-2120 Hz, reception at 2200-2300 Hz, and X-band reception at 8025-8500 Hz. The structure has minimized inertial moments in the rotating elements, a concrete tower, and a far-field dual reflector Cassegrain design. Command signals can be transmitted under any circumstances due to selectability of the signal polarization independent of the received signal.
