Candidates to ESA research and service oriented Earth Observation missions, i.e. Earth Explorer and Earth Watch missions, often require observations that can be provided only by deploying several satellites. In most cases this is dictated by spatial and temporal sampling / coverage requirements. Multiple satellites can also be the only means to implement specific observation techniques such as interferometry or sounding by occultation through the probed target. Multiple satellites are also needed to provide the appropriate observation geometry, e.g. coincidence of limb and nadir sounding observations, or to exploit signals in multi-static configuration. Small satellites may contribute to make these missions more affordable and should play an important role in Earth Observation.
