Experimental erosion rate measurements of N2 frozen gas films by MeV He(plus) ions, using the Rutherford backscattering method, are presented. The huge values obtained suggest the importance of this mechanism for the stability of frozen gases in astrophysical environments. The observed lateral non uniformity of the films eroded by a uniform beam shows that this mechanism produces surface roughness of the type inferred for astrophysical grains.
