The spindle-shaped minor planet Eros crossed the earth's orbit on 26 January 1975. The closest approach of Eros to earth was about 14 million miles. The characteristics of the asteroid, as currently known, are reviewed, giving attention to its dimensions and changes in brightness. Details of the program for the study of Eros during its approach are discussed, taking into account investigations conducted with the aid of radar and spectrophotometric observations. The exploration of the asteroid by means of a spacecraft landing on Eros is also considered.
