Modifications of the general relativity equations are attempted in order to see how gravitational collapse might be avoided or how the classical particle problem can be solved. These modifications can be successful at the price of violating the strong principle of equivalence of inertial, active gravitational, and passive gravitational mass. Einstein's equations with fourth-order corrections are promising with regard to solving the classical particle problem.
