Indications that the right ascensions of Newcomb's equatorial fundamental stars require significant correction lead to a reexamination of the position and motion of the equinox from 1755 to 1973. Measurements made with a number of techniques, including occultation and meridian observations, are assembled; all data are adjusted to a uniform system. A nonlinear drift in the motion of the equinox is detected, and a parabola is fitted to the plotted values by the least squares method. The resultant correction factor is found to imply an acceleration of the equinox at the rate of 1.3 arcsec per century which would have a significant effect on precession.
