The equilibrium and stability of a homogeneous uniformly rotating MacLaurin spheroid in a toroidal magnetic field proportional with the distance to the axis of rotation are investigated. The linearized equations are solved exactly even for the higher harmonics with the aid of modified spheroidal coordinates. The equilibrium is an oblate or prolate spheroid, the sequence of equilibrium figures exhibits a maximum value for the angular velocity in the oblate case and a maximum for the angular momentum in the prolate case.
