Rockets were launched into the bottomside equatorial F(2) region off the coast of Brazil on two evenings in September 1982 to inject chemicals to create a hole in ionization. The chemicals, consisting primarily of H2O and CO2, were injected to determine whether or not plasma bubble irregularities could be generated from instabilities triggered by the ionization hole. During both injections, depletions in total electron content of more than 10 to the 16th el/sq m were observed over horizontal distances at least 60 km from the injection point. The evolution of these depletions into plasma bubble irregularities is described.
