A discussion of elliptical analemmatic sundials shows that they are a subset of a group which has the property that the time is indicated by the intersection of a gnomon shadow with the projection of the equator circle. A systematic geometrical treatment of these leads to the discovery and presentation of a hitherto unknown subset designated the "central projection dials".
