Non-linear time-dependent acoustic wave calculations have been undertaken in an atmosphere model similar to α Boo. The model was chosen to represent conditions in a red giant beyond the Linsky-Haisch division line. It is considered that the wave period changes stochastically in the short period range. The distribution of the periods is assumed as Gaussian around 1.4×104s. The calculations predict a time-averaged period of 1.27×105s which is in excellent agreement with observations. It is found that stochastically recurring supersonic flows are generated which lead to episodic mass loss.
