The third and fourth flights of the balloon-borne in situ instrument SPIRALE, were devoted to ENVISAT validation. The first of the two flights took place at Aire Sur L'Adour France on October 2nd 2002, and the second at Kiruna Sweden on January 21st 2003. The main objective of the flights is the measurement of species also monitored by instruments on board ENVISAT: O3, N2O, CH4, HNO3, CO, NO2, HCl. Additional species are measured by SPIRALE NO, CO2, COF2, HOCl, H2O2. Water vapour measurements are performed by SPIRALE, but the values are meaningless due to gondola contamination. The instrument SPIRALE functioned satisfactorily. Profiles from SPIRALE are compared to those of ENVISAT instrument. Direct intercomparison, only possible with MIPAS near Kiruna, shows good agreement. Near Aire Sur L'Adour, direct intercomparison is not possible, so it needs trajectory calculations. Results of ASA flight are presented in this issue.
