Scientific paper
T Tauri stars are low {0.5-2 solar} mass, pre-main-sequence stars. Many may have circumstellar disks - theoretical models involving accretion disks have successfully explained some of the basic observational properties of these young objects. The disks play a major role in the formation and evolution of T Tauri stars, since the disks regulate accretion and may drive the bipolar winds associated with these objects. Our targets have large optical broad band polarizations, which suggest that the stars are at least partially obscured from direct view by an asymmetric distribution of dust, most likely an optically thick disk viewed nearly edge-on. We propose measurements of both flux calibrated { } J, H, and K images and polarimetric images at 1 and 2 microns, to reveal the presence and properties of these disks. The results will be compared with multiple scattering models of accretion disks.
