Mars Entry Probes, Pathfinder

Scientific paper

Two Mars entry probes are numerically simulated. The NASA Pathfinder probe that has been extensively studied is first rebuilt giving confidence in the numerical tools used for this study. Viscous effects and back section effects on the moment coefficient are assessed. The relation linking the inviscid flow field properties to the moment coefficient is shown. Following this study the CNES Mars Premier probe is studied for two points along the entry trajectory. Results are compared to wind tunnel data and to other numerical data showing that properly fitting the shock stand off distance (using correct gas specific heat ratio value) suffices for the moment coefficient prediction for the studied trajectory points.
