The energy spectrum of primary cosmic rays deduced from extensive-air-shower studies in 1965 is discussed, and the modifications introduced in the spectrum on the basis of experimental data obtained with sophisticated methods during the past few years are examined. Presently available experimental data are compared with the predictions of several models of the origin of cosmic rays.
