Particle data secured aboard Giotto by the energetic particle experiment at energies over 60 keV and by the JPA implanted ion sensor at energies over 2 keV are combined and composite energy spectra plotted for locations upstream of the bow shock, at the bow shock crossing and in the down-stream region. From a comparison of these data with theoretical energy spectra for water group ions which take into account the effect of adiabatic compression in the cometary accretion flow and assume varying degrees of scattering by hydromagnetic waves, it is found that a reasonable qualitative fit to the energy spectrum is obtained upstream of the shock if it is assumed that the mean free path corresponding to random scattering by Alfven waves is of the order of 30 gyroradii. An enhanced level of stochastic acceleration must be assumed in the turbulent region immediately downstream of the shock in order to adequately fit the observations.
