The stability of magnetic equilibria in stellar atmospheres is investigated analytically, applying the approach of Bernstein et al. (1958) to derive an energy principle for two-dimensional equilibria with gravity and simplifying further for two-component problems. The necessary and sufficient conditions for stability are obtained, and the application of the present approach to the polytropic atmosphere studied in spherical coordinates by Low (1984) is explained.
