The height dependence found by Kopp (1972) for the fraction of the solar surface emitting extreme-ultraviolet lines indicates that the radiation of the transition layer (log T ranging from 5.3 to 6.3) originates above the middle of supergranular cells. Hence the downward conductive energy flux from the corona determined from the radiative flux in these lines, contrary to Kopp's claim, agrees with previous findings. The conductive flux plays the chief role in establishing the temperature-height profile in the transition layer.
