An experiment considering a high pressure gas scintillation proportional counter (HPGSPC) and its potential as a large-area, high-energy-resolution, high-background-rejection detector for astronomical observations in the energy range from 4 to 120 keV, is described. The algorithm of the onboard position reconstruction and the energy correction required for the preservation of a full area quality energy resolution is also discussed. The simple design solution is compatible with the specific objectives of the SAX mission. Improvements of the design toward its optimization are considered possible, provided signals from all the photomultipliers are used for the spatial reconstruction and higher voltage is applied to the scintillating region of increased depth.
