One of the fundamental questions in aeronomy is that of energy balance. What are the sources of energy incident upon an atmosphere, how is this energy redistributed internally and how much of it is lost into space? These questions are key to understanding planetary atmospheres, and we address them by comparing different planets and moons with atmospheres, as opposed to studying each alone. In essence, most of the physical processes that are ongoing in Earth's atmosphere are also present on other planets, but with a different balance. The exploration of Venus and Mars has shown that infrared cooling is dominant in their atmospheres, explaining the unexpectedly cold temperatures. The auroral latitudes of Jupiter and Saturn are likely to feature equally important heating processes as on Earth, but theoretical calculations indicate that these are insufficient to explain the high temperatures found on those planets. This is still one of the big unresolved mysteries. One possible heating source may be waves propagating upward through the atmosphere and releasing their energy further up. This paper will review the energetics of various planetary atmospheres, in particular Saturn, Titan and Venus and show relevant model calculations as well as observations to better constrain the energy puzzle on some planets in our solar system.
